LactaRouteWhat a lactation visit asks of an EHR
General EHRs are built around one client in one chair. A lactation visit is two patients, a scale and a drive. These are the things to check, whichever system you choose.
- Mother and baby, one visitTwo patients in the room, each with a record, and one visit to write up.
- Feeding assessmentsLATCH and the other tools you score at nearly every visit.
- Weights and growthA weighted feed, and the baby’s weight on a growth chart.
- Home visitsOpen times that allow for the drive, and a travel fee for the distance.
- A report to the pediatricianMost pediatric offices still take it by fax.
- Superbills and claimsFamilies with coverage, and payers who reimburse lactation visits.
- A portal families can use at 3 a.m.Forms, plans and messages that read easily on a phone.
- Video follow-upsFor the check-in that doesn’t need a drive.
- AI you can leave offA note drafter you choose, and can turn off for good.
- A price that suits one personMost IBCLCs run a practice of one.
SimplePractice
Built for solo and group private practices. It has a page addressed to lactation consultants.
Listed priceStarter $49, Essential $79, Plus $99 a month, each at half price for the first three months.
Where it shines
- Telehealth and a client portal, named on its page for lactation consultants.
- Compliance it states plainly on its lactation page: HIPAA, HITRUST and PCI.
- Optional AI note-taking, sold as an add-on (Note Taker, $35 a month at list price).
- An appointment request widget on the Plus plan.
Where an IBCLC hits friction
- Its lactation consultant page describes the same general product. It doesn’t mention babies, growth or feeding assessments.
- Insurance claim filing (Insurance Navigator) is listed as coming soon, at $1.79 a claim.
- We didn’t find a parent-and-baby chart or drive-time planning for home visits on its site.
Moving to LactaRoute: export your client list and bring it in with the spreadsheet import.

- Faxing goes out through a connected service at $15 a month; incoming faxes stay outside Jane.
- We didn’t find feeding assessments, infant growth charts or drive-time planning on its site.

Where LactaRoute fits
LactaRoute is an EHR built by a working IBCLC for lactation and doula home visits. It does less for a counseling or nutrition practice than the four above.
If most of your week is therapy, nutrition or a clinic with rooms, and lactation is a small part of it, one of the general EHRs will likely suit you better.
- Mother and baby, one visitTwo linked records and one shared visit, charted once for both.
- Feeding assessmentsLATCH, Hazelbaker, TABBY/BTAT and EPDS add up as you chart; IBFAT is built in.
- Weights and growthBefore and after weights give the transfer; weights plot on WHO growth charts.
- Home visitsOpen times allow for the drive and your service area; travel fees come from the distance, and miles are logged from the day’s route.
- A report to the pediatricianFax the visit report from the chart with a cover sheet. Included in Pro, $5 a month on Free and Plus, or connect your own fax service free.
- Superbills and claimsSuperbills from the note, and insurance claims through your clearinghouse, on Plus and Pro.
- A portal for every familyVisits, forms, plans and secure messages, in your practice’s name.
- Video follow-ups$10 a month for each provider who turns it on. Never recorded.
- AI you can leave offThe scribe is opt-in, and a practice can hide every AI feature from its settings.
- PriceFree to start. Plus is $39 a month; Pro is $89 with the scribe and a team.
